13 Dec Winchester Bonfire and Fireworks 2017
Providing Sound Systems for one of the UK’s largest charity fireworks display in Winchester.
The beginning of this month saw us back at one of the biggest charity firework displays in the country. For the 8th year running we provided the sound systems for the backing music and public address systems for the Winchester fireworks. Working with the Winchester roundtable who run the event.
Prior to our involvement 8 years ago, Winchester Fireworks was suffering due to the event using outdated sound equipment that wasn’t suited to the job, despite growing in success and numbers. This event is over 60 years old, and with a rapidly growing audience year on year, the old horn PA speaker system that was being used were no longer enough for the 21,000 capacity event to hear any of the output or able to deliver the quality of music for backing the fireworks. Most importantly, the increase in numbers meant that a better focus on communicating health and safety messages to the crowd was paramount.
Our team here at Soundbite Productions used sound modelling software to plot the simulation of the speaker layout and sound system levels to ensure audience coverage to give acceptable sound levels all over the fields. Each year we install sound system towers of line array speaker systems, high above people’s heads in order to project audio far into the crowd and used small speakers to fill in the gaps and up front. Working with the organisers, we took our power from dedicated generators and use wireless RF links to avoid excess cabling.
For this year we also re-configured the sound systems to get better distribution of sound. This included having larger PA system towers that distributed the audio more evenly across the site. We also added bass speakers that gave the audio system a much better sound quality with more lower end and punchy bass. This made the audio system sound less harsh.
The resulting improvement in sound has seen the addition of fireworks set to music, providing a fantastic atmosphere and show. The background music throughout the evening has also gone a long way to creating an upbeat atmosphere that you don’t tend to get from your average Firework and Bonfire night!
This event has transformed into a huge success with a sell out crowd year after year. This has meant significantly more funds for local charities and has enabled extra revenue streams for advertising.
